Research Ethics
Research ethics is a core component of postgraduate study and ensures that research is conducted responsibly, lawfully, and with respect for participants, data, and wider society.
Before beginning data collection, postgraduate researchers are required to complete an ethics review process, demonstrating that potential risks have been identified and mitigated, and that appropriate safeguards are in place. This includes considerations such as informed consent, confidentiality, data protection, and researcher safety.
Early engagement with the ethics process is strongly advised, as approval can take time and may require revisions. Researchers should familiarise themselves with UWTSD’s ethics guidelines, seek guidance from their supervisors, and view ethics not as a procedural obstacle, but as an integral part of high‑quality, credible research.

Research Ethics Policies
All postgraduate research (PGR) students and research staff are required to meet high ethical and integrity standards before any data collection begins. This applies regardless of discipline, location, or method of research.
All researchers must comply with UWTSD’s:
- Research Ethics & Integrity Policy
- Research Data Management Policy
PG2 Ethics Form
The PG2 Ethics Form (and supporting information documents) is located on the Doctoral College portal. It outlines the ethical considerations and approval requirements for a proposed project or research activity and ensures that any potential risks to participants, data privacy, confidentiality, and consent are properly identified and managed. Your PG2 must be approved before data collection can begin.
Ethics Events
Numerous ethics training and support events take place online and in person throughout the postgraduate academic year.
Visit our students’ events section for more information.
Research Ethics and Integrity Policy
This is the University’s main ethics document and applies to all research students (PhD, MPhil, MSc by Research and Professional Doctorates) and research staff.
Key principles include:
- Honesty and rigour in research design, conduct, and reporting
- Care, respect, and fairness towards participants and those affected by the research
- Transparency and accountability in data handling and decision making
- Compliance with legal frameworks, including GDPR and safeguarding requirements
Research Data Management Policy
The UWTSD Research Data Management policy outlines how research data must be responsibly collected, stored, and managed throughout its lifecycle. It ensures compliance with legal and ethical standards (including GDPR) while promoting secure handling, sharing, and long-term preservation of data.
