If you have any questions on the research ethics process or on specific aspects of the PG2\, then feel free to ‘drop-in’ to one of our research ethics drop-in sessions. There is no need to book; simply turn up. The Co-Chairs of the Research Ethics Committee (Prof Nik Whithead\, and Dr Rebekah Humphreys) will help you with your queries / questions. \nFor staff and students \nResearch Ethics drop-in: Feb 4\, 2026 | Meeting-Join | Microsoft Teams

SUMMARY:Doctoral College Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our next seminar in the Doctoral College Seminar Series. This series of talks brings together postgraduate researchers and staff from across the university to share insights into researcher stories and learning. \nAll welcome! \nRegister here \n  \nIf you know your ologies: Tales from the bog and other stories \nDr John Harris  \nInstitute of Inner City Learning\, UWTSD Birmingham \n5th February 2026 1-2pm \nLecture Room 16\, Louisa House\, Birmingham and Online  \n  \nOverview \nThis presentation will consider how individuals choose topics for research and reflect upon some of the ways in which we write about these studies. It will look at the role of reflexivity and how scholarship is (re)presented. Shaped by the sociological imagination of C Wright Mills\, and the work of the cultural theorist Raymond Williams\, I outline some of the challenges and possibilities of writing in the first person.     It draws upon ethnographic research\, case studies on the analysis of media discourse\, and various consultancy and engagement projects.  This story starts with a young PhD student struggling to find a research focus and ends with a much older person working on a REF submission across five units of assessment.  It will include stops at some of the more interesting places in between.  These include the World Alternative Games in Britain’s smallest town and the front and back pages of national newspapers. \n  \nBiography \nJohn Harris joined UWTSD in the summer of 2025 to lead the first delivery of the DBA program on the Birmingham campus.  His previous positions include those of tenured Associate Professor in Sport Administration (Kent State University\, USA) and Professor of Cultural Business (Glasgow Caledonian University\, Scotland). John has an eclectic research profile and has enjoyed collaborating with colleagues across various subject areas. This work has been published in a range of journals including Geographical Research\, Scottish Affairs\, Journal of Rural Studies\, Management Research Review\, International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy\, and National Identities. He is the author of Rugby Union and Globalization (Palgrave Macmillan) and editor/co-editor of several anthologies in sport\, event and tourism management. \n Register here  \nhttps://events.teams.microsoft.com/event/3bc0ebef-198f-41fb-bded-18af1e325de0@4e0f11f9-046e-4505-9cb8-db2152311e21

SUMMARY:Publishing non-fiction for the general reader
DESCRIPTION:This interactive workshop session aims to encourage researchers to publish non-fiction by learning strategies from the writer’s and editor’s points of view. The Learned Society of Wales is delighted to be collaborating with our Fellow\, Professor Hanna Diamond (Professor Emerita of French History\, Cardiff University) and Joanna Godfrey (Senior Commissioning Editor\, Yale University Press London) to host this session open to early and mid-career researchers in Wales. \nJo Godfrey will draw on her experience at Yale to outline key principles for developing a successful trade book. Jo will provide suggestions on how researchers can identify subjects with broad audience appeal\, shape an accessible and compelling writing style\, and discuss the relevance of building public-facing engagement to increase the book’s dissemination to the general public. Jo will also address related topics\, including peer review and how these models intersect with non-fiction scholarship. \nProfessor Hanna Diamond will focus on the craft of balancing scholarly depth with readability. Based on her recent publication\, ‘Josephine Baker’s Secret War’\, Hanna will discuss how she integrated an academic frameworks into the book’s writing\, for instance\, how she handled evidence and sources in ways that inform the narrative while maintaining momentum for general readers. Hanna will also reflect on strategies for engaging wider audiences in scholarly debates and discuss how trade publications can contribute to academic recognition\, highlighting that books aimed at general readers can achieve high scores in REF panels and serve as the foundation for REF impact case studies. \n\nGuest Speakers: \n\nProfessor Hanna Diamond (FLSW)\, Professor Emerita of French History\, Cardiff University\nHanna Diamond is professor emerita of French History at Cardiff University. She did both her undergraduate degree and PhD at the University of Sussex. She spent several years teaching and researching in France before taking up a lectureship at the University of Bath in 1993. Why do you think these features were effective in making complex ideas accessible?\n(2) If you were to start writing your own non-fiction book that bridges academic depth with general interest\, what do you think would be most challenging for you\, and why\n1.45-1.55pm: Question and Answers\n1.55-2.00pm: Closing Remarks\n\n\nAbout the Learned Society of Wales’ Early Career Researchers Network: \nThe Learned Society of Wales‘ Early Career Researchers (ECR) Network is an interdisciplinary network of researchers working across Wales who are in the early stages of their careers. The Network supports researchers to grow their research networks\, engage in collaborative and interdisciplinary opportunities\, receive training\, and discover new ways of creating impact with research.
